Bruce Barnbaum Photograph Above: Layers, Lofoten Islands

Skrova is an isolated island south of the main chain of islands off Norway's rugged coastline, known as the Lofoten Islands. For those who think that the location is a cold one, it isn't. Though it lies near the Arctic Circle, it is also at the far end of the Gulf Stream, so moderate temperatures prevail. The Lofoten Islands are like the tops of the Grand Tetons sticking up out of the ocean. Few places on can earth rival it for sheer magnificence.

Skrova is accessible only by ferry or private boat, making it virtually a paradise. We will hold a 5-day workshop on Skrova that features field sessions to several parts of this small island, which is less than one square mile. Yet there's enough on the island to sustain a lifetime of photography...and if that fails to satisfy us, we can certainly take the ferry to the nearby larger islands with their ragged, rugged mountains and mirror-like waters. The main islands are all connected by excellent roads, bridges and tunnels.

In addition, the workshop will feature complete reviews and discussions of all student work, with an eye toward suggesting ways to refine and improve the imagery. Bruce will present some of his own work, explaining every aspect of the thinking behind the imagery, the initial exposures and developments of the negatives, and the printing of the final image. A fully equipped group darkroom is available for student use throughout the workshop for negative developing as well as printing, and if students demand and time permits, Bruce will demonstrate printing techniques using some of his own negatives.

It will be a very complete workshop in an area of unmatched scenic splendor. We will be there during the autumnal equinox, so days will still be long and bright. A previous workshop scheduled for September 12 - 16 filled nearly instantly, but the demand was so high that Bruce has agreed to stay on to present another similar workshop the following week. Both workshops were conceived by students from Norway. The second workshop (September 19 - 23) is not yet fully subscribed: a few spaces still remain open to serious photographers from around the world. Please do not delay in inquiring and applying for this very special 5-day workshop.

* The cost of the workshop is 5,000 Norwegian Kroner, which translates to approximately $975 U.S. Dollars at today's exchange rate (which varies day to day). Lodging and food (three meals per day for the duration of the workshop) adds up to about $925 for the workshop. Again, this may vary depending on the dollar/kroner exchange rate, though the change should not be great.
